Chinese Military Spying

An interesting article in the Globe & Mail today quoted a recent Financial Times report, citing former and serving U.S. officials: “Chinese People's Liberation Army hackers broke into a U.S. Defence Department network in June, taking data and prompting the shutdown of a system serving Defence Secretary Robert Gates. This came just a week after German Chancellor Angela Merkel raised similar claims that Chinese hackers had infected German government ministries with spying programs.”

We should always remain aware that any country, government agency, business or individual with sufficient interest and the required ability, will spy on anyone else just because they can...!

My concern in this instance, with the US and perhaps our own intelligence people, is that general 'zero-tolerance' policies lead to a government culture that believes absolute certainty can be achieved...which is of course an impossibility, especially so in the intelligence gathering world...

The idea of 'certainty achieved' is dangerous, as alertness to what might happen or could occur at some future point becomes dulled and even disappears....I see this everyday in the business world...

We would do well to strive for people awareness/alertness as opposed to control in beefing up our intelligence technology.

Reliance on technology alone is the biggest danger facing our security!
Technology manages information...People drive technology
